Rooms and comfort

The renovated tower is the one to insist on: firm beds, proper blackout, and glazing that holds out both the traffic and the crowds below. The older tower is fifteen years behind on bathrooms and noticeably softer underfoot. Anything on floor six or above is quiet at night; floors two to four sit close enough to the entertainment wing and the service corridors to pick up movement until late. Family rooms are large and genuinely usable, with a partition rather than a curtain.

Dining

Four outlets, of which two matter: a buffet that works well for children and badly for anyone else, and a steak room that is expensive but competent. A café by the lobby runs until midnight, which covers late arrivals. Breakfast is a paid buffet in most rate plans; the queue between eight and nine on a Saturday is long enough to plan around.

Location

A ten-minute downhill walk to the falls and a hard uphill walk back, with the tourist strip in between. The position is the reason to stay, and the reason it is busy. Off-season, the same rooms cost a third less and the walk is pleasant. Transit to the wider region is limited; most guests drive.

Service and atmosphere

Large-property service: efficient at the desk, slow on the telephone, variable in housekeeping. Requests handled by whoever is nearest, and followed through about three times out of four. The public areas are busy and bright at all hours, which suits some trips and ruins others.

Amenities

A good indoor pool with a separate children's area, a large gym, a spa with limited hours, a theatre with touring shows, and the gaming floor in the north wing behind its own entrance. The pool is the standout and is open from six in the morning.

Rooms and comfort

Built for sleep between flights and good at it. Rooms are quiet, dark and cool, with heavy curtains, a firm bed and an air system you can hear only if you listen for it. The desk is small, the wardrobe is adequate, and the bathroom is modern and well drained. Little charm and no view worth the name — the tower faces a road and a river, and one side hears aircraft in the early morning even through good glass.

Dining

A 24-hour café, an Asian dining room that is the best food in the building by a wide margin, and a bar. Round-the-clock food is the single most valuable amenity in an airport hotel and this property understands that. Breakfast is included in most rates and served from 05:00, which matters for a first flight out.

Location

Eight minutes by shuttle to the terminal, running every twenty minutes from before dawn until after the last arrival. Nothing is walkable except a strip mall and the dyke path, which is a genuinely pleasant hour on a bicycle. Downtown Vancouver is thirty to fifty minutes depending on traffic, or a short walk to the rapid transit line.

Service and atmosphere

Practised and unsentimental, geared to guests who arrive tired at odd hours. Check-in is quick, luggage handling is competent, and the desk will hold a room for a delayed flight without argument. Nobody pretends the place is a destination.

Amenities

Small pool, adequate gym open 24 hours, business room, and the gaming floor in a separate single-storey building reached by an internal corridor. That separation is worth noting: the tower is entirely unaffected by it, which is exactly how a casino hotel should be laid out.

The best rooms of the twelve properties on this site. Large, quiet and recently refitted, with excellent beds, blackout that works, a bath and a separate shower in most categories, and river views that justify the higher floors. Corridors are wide and carpeted, and the tower is genuinely silent after eleven — the entertainment wing sits in a detached building across a landscaped court.

Dining

Three restaurants, all worth eating in, which is unusual at this scale: a serious French room, a bistro that serves until eleven, and a market-style breakfast included in most rates. Room service runs to midnight with a short but properly cooked menu. The wine list in the main room is expensive and unusually deep.

Location

Parkland on an island a few minutes from the bridge, with the city skyline in view and nothing walkable except the park itself — which is beautiful, and a five-kilometre loop. Downtown is ten to twenty minutes by car, longer by bus. Drivers are the winners here; free underground parking in Montréal is close to unheard of.

Service and atmosphere

Polished and bilingual, with a concierge desk that actually books things and follows up. The property behaved well when a room was found to have a faulty bathroom fan: moved within twenty minutes, no discussion. Public areas are calm, adult and quiet — the atmosphere of a conference hotel on a good day.

Amenities

A twenty-five-metre pool, a full spa with same-day availability, a large gym, a theatre, and gardens that are used properly in summer. The gaming floor is in the detached wing and is invisible from the accommodation side. Pool and spa hours are long, including Sundays.

Rooms and comfort

Big, plain and clean, with beds that are perfectly good and pillows that are not. Third floor is the one to ask for: the second sits directly above the entertainment area and the lobby bar, and on a Friday that is audible until one in the morning. Heating is powerful, as it needs to be. Bathrooms are dated but function, and the water is hot immediately at any hour.

Dining

A single restaurant doing breakfast and dinner to 21:30, plus a bar menu until 23:00. The food is unambitious — burgers, schnitzel, a fish special — and priced fairly. Included breakfast is a limited hot buffet that runs out of the good items by half past eight. There is a coffee machine in the lobby that is better than it looks.

Location

On a highway approach with a retail park across the road; nothing pleasant to walk to, but eleven minutes' drive to the river and the centre. In February the free plug-in parking and the covered entrance matter more than the view. Airport is twelve minutes by car.

Service and atmosphere

The friendliest staff in this group by a distance, and the least polished. Things get done because someone decides to do them, not because a system exists. The lobby doubles as a thoroughfare for the entertainment area, so it is busier in the evening than the room count suggests.

Amenities

Small pool and hot tub, tired gym, coin laundry, and the gaming floor directly off the lobby. The layout is the property's main weakness as a place to sleep — a casino inn of this size cannot easily separate the two functions, and this one does not really try.

Rooms and comfort

Straightforward and well maintained, with the best family units of the six: two proper rooms, two televisions, and a bathroom that two adults can get ready in at once. Beds are medium and consistent across categories. A single corridor on the second floor runs toward the entertainment wing and is worth avoiding; everywhere else is quiet. Windows do not open, and the climate control is per-room rather than per-floor.

Dining

Two rooms: a family restaurant serving to 21:00 and a bar with a shorter menu to 23:00. The seafood is better than the rest of the menu and the chowder is genuinely good. Included breakfast is generous and busy; arrive before eight or after nine. Nothing is available after eleven, and Moncton itself quietens early.

Location

Outside the centre with easy highway access in three directions, which is precisely the point for a Maritime driving trip — Fundy, Charlottetown and Halifax are all within reach for a day. Downtown Moncton is eight minutes by car. Walking amounts to a retail strip and a pleasant riverside trail ten minutes away.

Service and atmosphere

Calm, capable and used to families arriving late from long drives. The desk provided ice, a route map and a recommendation without being asked twice. Housekeeping was consistent across four nights. The building is quiet by ten, including in the public areas.

Amenities

A large pool with a lift and a shallow end, a hot tub, a reasonable gym, laundry, and the gaming floor at the south end with its own street entrance. The separation works: from the guest lifts you would not know it was there.

Rooms and comfort

Comfortable and quiet, with the lake-facing rooms clearly worth their premium in October. Beds are good, blackout is complete, and balconies on the upper floors actually open. The west wing above the entertainment area is the exception to the general quiet and should be declined; everything from the fourth floor up is silent. Bathrooms are large, with a soaking tub in the higher categories.

Dining

Three outlets of uneven quality: a good grill room, a mediocre buffet, and a lounge serving until midnight. Breakfast is à la carte and paid, and the better choice is the grill room's short morning menu. Room service is available to eleven. Reservations on autumn weekends are essential, as the property fills with people who have driven up for the colour.

Location

On a lake in the hills, twenty-five minutes from central Ottawa and five from a provincial park gate. There is nothing to walk to and no need for it: the trails start at the property boundary and the cross-country skiing in winter is on the doorstep. Transit is impractical; this is a driving destination.

Service and atmosphere

Professional and warm in both languages, with a spa desk that manages bookings properly and a front desk that handles a full house without visible strain. The atmosphere is that of a resort hotel rather than a city one — slower, quieter, and older in profile midweek.

Amenities

The best spa in this group, with outdoor thermal pools that stay open through winter and are worth the trip on their own. Also an indoor pool, a strong gym, ski and bicycle storage, and a gaming floor in the west wing. Thermal pool access is included for guests, which is unusual and should be checked at booking.
